How the calculation works
The five registers balance to zero. Money in is +, money out is −; r is the rate per payment period.
A worked example
- Nominal annual rate (%)
- 6
- Periods
- 360
- Present value
- 200,000
- Payments per year
- 12
- Compounding per year
- 12
- FV
- 0
Step by step
- r = Nominal annual rate (%) ÷ Payments per year = 6 % ÷ 12 = 0.5 %
- n = 360 · (1 + r)^−n = 0.166 · (1 − (1 + r)^−n) ÷ r = 166.7916
- Payment per period = −(200,000 + 0 × 0.166) ÷ 166.7916 = -1,199.1
- Total of 360 payments: 360 × -1,199.1 = -431,676.38 · Interest: 231,676.38
Periods count payments: a 30-year monthly loan has 360. A loan you receive is a positive present value, so the payment comes out negative.
If one input changes
- Nominal annual rate (%) = 4: Payment per period = -954.83
- Nominal annual rate (%) = 5: Payment per period = -1,073.64
- Nominal annual rate (%) = 7: Payment per period = -1,330.6
- Nominal annual rate (%) = 8: Payment per period = -1,467.53
