How the calculation works
The five registers balance to zero. Money in is +, money out is −; r is the rate per payment period.
A worked example
- Nominal annual rate (%)
- 5
- Periods
- 10
- Present value
- -10,000
- Payment per period
- -100
- Payments per year
- 1
- Compounding per year
- 1
Step by step
- r = Nominal annual rate (%) ÷ Payments per year = 5 % ÷ 1 = 5 %
- n = 10 · (1 + r)^−n = 0.6139 · (1 − (1 + r)^−n) ÷ r = 7.7217
- (1 + r)^n = 1.6289 · ((1 + r)^n − 1) ÷ r = 12.5779
- FV = −(-10,000 × 1.6289 + -100 × 12.5779) = 17,546.74
Money you pay in is negative and the amount you get back is positive. Periods count payments, not years.
If one input changes
- Nominal annual rate (%) = 3: FV = 14,585.55
- Nominal annual rate (%) = 4: FV = 16,003.05
- Nominal annual rate (%) = 6: FV = 19,226.56
- Nominal annual rate (%) = 7: FV = 21,053.16
