How each medicine works

Hydrochlorothiazide — Affects distal renal tubular electrolyte reabsorption and increases sodium and chloride excretion. The selected label describes the mechanism of its antihypertensive effect as unknown.
Lisinopril / Hydrochlorothiazide — Lisinopril inhibits ACE, lowering angiotensin II and aldosterone; hydrochlorothiazide is a thiazide diuretic.
Losartan / Hydrochlorothiazide — Losartan selectively blocks angiotensin II binding at AT1 receptors; hydrochlorothiazide increases renal sodium and chloride excretion.
Olmesartan / Amlodipine / Hydrochlorothiazide — Olmesartan blocks angiotensin II effects, amlodipine blocks calcium entry into vascular smooth muscle, and HCTZ promotes sodium and chloride excretion.
Triamterene / Hydrochlorothiazide — HCTZ blocks renal tubular sodium and chloride reabsorption; triamterene inhibits distal sodium reabsorption, reducing potassium loss.
Chlorthalidone — A long-acting oral diuretic that increases sodium and chloride excretion. Its site of action appears to be the cortical diluting segment of the ascending limb of Henle’s loop; the antihypertensive mechanism is not wholly clear.

Each summary is the mechanism line from the medicine’s study card.

What each medicine is used for

Hydrochlorothiazide — Hypertension, alone or with other antihypertensive medicines; Adjunctive treatment of edema associated with congestive heart failure or hepatic cirrhosis; Edema associated with specified forms of renal dysfunction
Lisinopril / Hydrochlorothiazide — Hypertension when this fixed-dose combination is appropriate; it is not indicated for initial therapy
Losartan / Hydrochlorothiazide — Hypertension; this fixed-dose combination is not initial therapy except in selected severe cases where prompt control outweighs combination-initiation risk; Stroke-risk reduction in hypertension with left ventricular hypertrophy; the label reports evidence that this specific benefit does not apply to Black patients
Olmesartan / Amlodipine / Hydrochlorothiazide — Hypertension requiring the selected olmesartan/amlodipine/hydrochlorothiazide combination; not indicated for initial therapy
Triamterene / Hydrochlorothiazide — Hypertension or edema with hypokalemia on HCTZ; Thiazide need where hypokalemia can't be risked
Chlorthalidone — Hypertension in adults

Also in other drug classes: Lisinopril / Hydrochlorothiazide (ACE inhibitors) · Losartan / Hydrochlorothiazide (Angiotensin II receptor blockers) · Olmesartan / Amlodipine / Hydrochlorothiazide (Angiotensin II receptor blockers, Dihydropyridine calcium channel blockers)

Chlorthalidone — Thiazide-like rather than a thiazide by chemical structure; the label describes a monosulfamyl diuretic with a different ring structure.
