How the calculation works
Each piece is cut 1 cm larger on every edge, so its width and its length each grow by 2 cm.
A worked example: Cushion cover, 45 × 45 cm · 18 × 18 in
- Fabric width
- 140 cm
- Seam allowance per edge
- 1 cm
- Usable fabric width
- 140 cm
- Front × 1 — Width: 45 cm + 2 × 1 cm = 47 cm · Length: 45 cm + 2 × 1 cm = 47 cm
- Back panel × 2 — Width: 45 cm + 2 × 1 cm = 47 cm · Length: 30 cm + 2 × 1 cm = 32 cm
Where each piece sits on the fabric
- Front: 47 cm × 47 cm — x 0 cm · y 0 cm
- Back panel 1: 47 cm × 32 cm — x 47 cm · y 0 cm
- Back panel 2: 47 cm × 32 cm — x 47 cm · y 32 cm
x: distance from the fabric edge · y: distance along the fabric length
- Required
- 64 cm · 0.64 m · 0.7 yd
- Unused fabric area (%)
- 41.8
A worked example: Cushion cover, 45 × 45 cm · 18 × 18 in (Inches)
- Fabric width
- 54 in
- Seam allowance per edge
- 0.5 in
- Usable fabric width
- 54 in
- Front × 1 — Width: 18 in + 2 × 0.5 in = 19 in · Length: 18 in + 2 × 0.5 in = 19 in
- Back panel × 2 — Width: 18 in + 2 × 0.5 in = 19 in · Length: 12 in + 2 × 0.5 in = 13 in
- Required
- 26 in · 0.66 m · 0.72 yd
Length needed for each template size and fabric width
- 40 × 40 cm · 16 × 16 in: 110 cm → 58 cm · 140 cm → 42 cm · 150 cm → 42 cm
- 45 × 45 cm · 18 × 18 in: 110 cm → 64 cm · 140 cm → 64 cm · 150 cm → 47 cm
- 50 × 50 cm · 20 × 20 in: 110 cm → 70 cm · 140 cm → 70 cm · 150 cm → 70 cm
- 60 × 60 cm · 24 × 24 in: 110 cm → 146 cm · 140 cm → 84 cm · 150 cm → 84 cm
- 40 × 40 cm · 16 × 16 in: 44 in → 24 in · 54 in → 17 in · 60 in → 17 in
- 45 × 45 cm · 18 × 18 in: 44 in → 26 in · 54 in → 26 in · 60 in → 19 in
- 50 × 50 cm · 20 × 20 in: 44 in → 28 in · 54 in → 28 in · 60 in → 28 in
- 60 × 60 cm · 24 × 24 in: 44 in → 59 in · 54 in → 34 in · 60 in → 34 in
Template sizes and pieces
Measurements do not include seam allowance. The calculator adds it to each edge.
