Example calculation
Compare fabric widths: worked out from the values already filled in the form above.
Inputs
- Measurements in: Millimetres
- Fabric width: 1,400
- Seam allowance per edge: 10
- Your measurements: Width 450 · Length 450 · Quantity 2 · Keep the grain direction ✓
Result
- Required: 0.47 m · 0.514 yd
- Unused fabric area (%): 32.857%
- Fabric width 1100 mm: 0.47 m
- Fabric width 1400 mm: 0.47 m
- Fabric width 1500 mm: 0.47 m
How the calculation works
Keep the pieces and seam allowance unchanged while comparing fabric widths. A wider fabric can allow another piece in the same row, so the required length changes in steps rather than as a simple width ratio.
The comparison includes 1100, 1400 and 1500 mm widths with the same grain and folding settings. A width that cannot accommodate every piece is marked accordingly. Check the usable width after removing selvages before buying.
