Example calculation
Fabric yardage calculator: worked out from the values already filled in the form above.
Inputs
- Measurements in: Millimetres
- Fabric width: 1,400
- Seam allowance per edge: 10
- Your measurements: Width 450 · Length 450 · Quantity 2 · Keep the grain direction ✓
Result
- Required: 0.47 m · 0.514 yd
- Unused fabric area (%): 32.857%
How the calculation works
Enter the finished rectangular dimensions of each piece. The calculator adds the seam allowance to the cut edges and places the pieces across the available width. Grain-locked pieces keep their orientation; unlocked pieces may rotate by 90 degrees.
The result is a cutting estimate for rectangles. It does not trace curved pattern outlines or reserve fabric for print matching, shrinkage or defects. If a piece is wider than the usable fabric, it is listed as unplaced instead of being squeezed into the diagram.
