Reference numbers and the limits of a formatted entry
Set an explicit reference number for an IEEE or NLM entry, see which values are accepted, and what the formatted entry leaves to you.
The number belongs to your document
A reference number places an entry in one document's list; it is not a permanent number for the source. The table above keeps the same IEEE webpage source and changes only the requested number. The values 1, 7 and 100000 are accepted and appear as [1], [7] and [100000]. The values 0, 1.5 and 100001 are rejected, because the Reference number field accepts whole numbers from 1 to 100000. That upper limit is a product check, not advice about bibliography length.
Where the number appears
- Only the IEEE numbered reference and NLM Citing Medicine numbered reference forms print the number, as [7] or 7. at the start of the entry.
- The other four styles ignore the Reference number field.
- A rejected value holds the entry with Reference number: review this source detail.
- Changing the number disables Copy reference and the downloads until you press Create reference again.
- Clear source and result sets the number back to 1, along with APA 7 and the Webpage kind.
What the entry does not do
A formatted reference is one part of a citing document. The workbench returns no in-text citation and no Chicago full or shortened notes. It does not read your manuscript, sort entries or renumber citations when an entry moves. Harvard is not offered in the workbench; Leeds Harvard and ABNT are not enabled, and an internal Harvard check returns an unreviewed-style warning. IEEE book, chapter, conference, report and dissertation cases are also held until both the publication place and its country are supplied. One checked entry is not a guarantee for a whole style.
Numbering in the Citelle app
In the app, IEEE and Vancouver bibliographies are numbered automatically in the order you added the sources, and other styles are sorted by author or title. Each card's number is its position in the list, so adding or deleting a source changes the numbers of the entries after it. Copy in-text gives the matching [n] for IEEE or (n) for Vancouver. Both styles are part of Citelle Pro.
After every change to the list
- Keep the source details the same while you change only its list number.
- Check that each number in your text points to the intended entry.
- Read the whole entry after moving it, not just the number at the start.
- Review in-text citations, notes and institutional rules separately.
Review supported number inputs
These rows keep the same reviewed IEEE webpage source and change only the requested reference number. The local input requires an integer from 1 through 100000. The upper bound is a product validation limit, not advice about the size of a bibliography.
