Chicago 18 bibliography: cite a book

Create the Chicago 18 bibliography entry for an authored book, with the edition after the title and the year at the end after the publisher.

Year at the end

In a notes-and-bibliography entry for a book, the year does not follow the author. The entry gives the author, the italicized title, the edition, and then the publisher with the year after a comma. A note for the same book uses a different order and punctuation, so keep this entry for the bibliography.

For Stone's book, the bibliography line on this page is: Stone, Maya. A Small Book. 2nd ed. Example Press, 2024.

Book steps in the workbench

After you press Create reference, a status line asks you to review the reference against your source and institution instructions. Any later change to a field clears the entry, and Copy reference stays disabled until you create it again, so the copied text always matches the form.

Why the city field matters

The page records no city for this book, and the entry has none. If a city is typed, the workbench prints it before the publisher, as in London: Example Press, 2024. Load a fictional example for this source kind fills London for you, so clear it if you want to reproduce this example. The Citelle app likewise prints its City field before the publisher in Chicago.

Notes for this book in Citelle

Chicago (notes) is part of Citelle Pro. With it selected for a bibliography, Copy citation gives the bibliography entry with italics, and Copy in-text gives a shortened-note text of author and short title, Stone, A Small Book. In plain text the italics on the short title are lost, so add them in your document. The app finds the edition from an ISBN through Open Library when you use Scan barcode.

Changing a bibliography's style in the app reformats every entry at once, so you can compare the author-date and bibliography forms of the same book.
