Report numbers: missing or not assigned

Record whether a report number is supplied, confirmed absent or not yet checked, and see how each state changes the APA report entry.

Three reasons a field can be blank

An empty report-number field can mean that the source has no number, that nobody has checked yet, or that the number was simply not typed. The workbench makes you say which. Report-number availability offers A report number is supplied, The source has no assigned report number and Not yet checked. Choosing the second option is a statement about the report itself; do not use it just to get past an open field.

Reading the four rows

The table above uses one invented report. With the number supplied as 17, the APA entry includes (Report No. 17). With no number assigned and the field empty, the entry is accepted without the parentheses. With the state left unknown, the entry is held and shows Report-number availability: provide the source information. The last row says no number was assigned while still supplying 17; that contradiction is held with Report-number availability: review this source detail. After Clear source and result, the control returns to Not yet checked.

A report number typed while the availability is still Not yet checked does not count; the entry is held until you choose a state that agrees with the number field.

How other styles use the number

Finding the number

Look for a report designation and number on the cover, the title page or the documentation page of the report, or in its own catalogue record. A journal issue, a publication date, a page count or a position in your reference list is not a report number. Report number 17 belongs to the source; the [1] in front of a numbered entry belongs to your document, even when the two happen to match. The Citelle app's Report type has no separate report-number field, so check numbered reports in the workbench.

Limits of this comparison

The accepted rows show the reviewed APA print-report path only. A passing report-number check does not confirm the report's identity, its optional fields or a whole style profile.

The supplied report has number 17. The second row deliberately describes a different input assertion: no number assigned, with no number string. The third leaves the assignment unknown. The last says “not assigned” while still supplying 17, so the details contradict one another.
