IEEE: cite a webpage
Cite a specific authored webpage in IEEE with a period after the author, the access date written as Oct. 26, 2026, and the [Online] URL.
A webpage form with an access date
This IEEE case is a specific webpage with a named author. Unlike the journal form, this website template puts a period after the author's name, and the title is in quotation marks with a period inside. The access date and the URL, introduced by [Online]. Available:, close the entry. The IEEE Reference Guide and the IEEE Professional Communication Society page are both linked below.
The IEEE example for Stone's page is: [1] M. Stone. “A sample web page.” Sample Library. Accessed: Oct. 26, 2026. [Online]. Available: https://example.org/sample-page
Entering the page
Access month and day are typed as numbers; the workbench converts 10 into the abbreviation Oct. and writes the day after it, followed by a comma and the year.
- Choose IEEE numbered reference and Webpage, with Online version.
- Enter Maya Stone, then A sample web page as source title and reviewed sentence-case title.
- Type Sample Library in Containing work or site and https://example.org/sample-page in Source URL.
- Fill the publication date 2024, 6, 1 and the access date 2026, 10, 26.
- Press Create reference; the access month appears as Oct.
Fields the workbench insists on
The access date must be complete. With only the year and month, the entry is held with Access date: provide the source information. The publication year is also required, although this IEEE webpage entry does not print the page date. Example Institute is recorded as publisher, but the site name Sample Library is used when both are given. The reference number can be any whole number from 1 to 100000.
A punctuation difference in the app
Citelle's IEEE entry for a web page puts a comma after the author's initials, as in its other IEEE forms, rather than the period this website template uses. Compare the app's preview with the example above and correct the punctuation if you follow this template. If you have not set an access date, the app uses today's date; choosing Web page fills Accessed with today, and you can change it.
Before you submit the page reference
- Use the date you actually consulted the page as the access date.
- Keep the access date separate from the page's own date.
- An online journal article is a different source type, not a webpage.
- Check the bracket number against its place in your list.
- Keep [Online]. Available: with the URL exactly as the example shows.
Gather the source details
- Identify a named author or responsible organization.
- Record the page title and relevant site or publisher role.
- Check the date that applies to this page.
- Retain the exact source location and the access date required by the chosen convention.
