Sangria Cocktail Recipe

Sangria

Spain's famous red wine punch, steeped with citrus and brandy and served ice cold by the pitcher.

Ingredients

How to Make It

  1. Combine red wine, brandy, orange juice and sugar in a pitcher.
  2. Add the chopped orange and lemon and stir until the sugar dissolves.
  3. Chill for at least two hours so the fruit macerates.
  4. Fill wine glasses with ice, pour and top with a splash of soda water.
  5. Garnish with an orange wheel and some of the fruit.

Garnish

Orange wheel and macerated fruit

What it tastes like

Fruit notes come forward and it drinks cool and easy.

The technique

Built in the glass. Ice goes into the serving glass, the ingredients go on top, and you stir once if at all. Anything carbonated goes in LAST and never gets stirred; every turn of the spoon costs you bubbles. Fill the glass to the rim with ice: less ice melts faster, not slower.

Glass and ice

A stemmed wine glass. The big bowl leaves room for ice and fruit, and gives the aroma somewhere to gather.

Ingredient notes and substitutes

Red wine
You want a young, fruity red that does not push its tannin; heavy, oaky wines turn harsh against cola or soda. Expensive wine is wasted here.
Fresh orange juice
Fresh orange juice. Carton juice is sugar-adjusted, so it sweetens the drink and drops its acidity; when you squeeze your own, pull back a little on the syrup.
Sugar
Granulated sugar. It dissolves badly in a cold drink, so either muddle it with a few drops of water first or turn it into syrup to begin with.
Soda water
Plain carbonated water. It goes in LAST and nothing is stirred after it. An open bottle goes flat fast, so small bottles make more sense than big ones.

The Story

A classic Iberian wine-and-fruit punch tied to Spanish summers and celebrations, which spread far beyond Spain during the twentieth century.

Frequently asked questions

How is a Sangria mixed?
It is built in the glass and served in a wine glass.
How strong is a Sangria?
Roughly 11% ABV as served — right around a glass of wine — an aperitif or an early-evening drink.
Can a Sangria be made without alcohol?
Simply leaving the spirit out does not work — the body and the bitterness go with it. The 86 alcohol-free recipes in the catalogue are built to hit that balance from the start.
Is a Sangria hard to make?
Easy. No bar kit required — a measure, ice and a jar will do.
