Example calculation
Fabric with seam allowance: worked out from the values already filled in the form above.
Inputs
- Measurements in: Millimetres
- Fabric width: 1,400
- Seam allowance per edge: 10
- Your measurements: Width 450 · Length 450 · Quantity 2 · Keep the grain direction ✓
Result
- Required: 0.47 m · 0.514 yd
- Unused fabric area (%): 32.857%
How the calculation works
The allowance is per edge, not a single addition to the whole piece. A finished 450 × 450 mm square with 10 mm seams becomes a 470 × 470 mm cutting rectangle. For ordinary pieces, both width and height grow by twice the allowance.
Do not add the allowance twice. If your supplied pattern dimensions already include seams, enter zero here. The fold edge is handled separately on a cut-on-fold piece; the other cut edges still receive the selected allowance.
