Enalapril: study card

Enalapril — ACE inhibitor. Study the mechanism, listed uses and warnings from the US label on one sourced card.

Generic name
Enalapril
Class
ACE inhibitor
Mechanism
Hydrolyzed to enalaprilat, which inhibits ACE, blocking angiotensin II formation and aldosterone secretion.
Used for
Hypertension in adults and children aged 1 month and older; not recommended in neonates or children with GFR below 30 mL/min/1.73 m²; Symptomatic heart failure, usually with diuretics and digitalis; Reduction of overt heart failure and related hospitalization in clinically stable, asymptomatic left ventricular dysfunction with ejection fraction at or below 35%
Common side effects
Headache; Dizziness; Fatigue; Cough; Rash
Boxed warning
Fetal toxicity: discontinue as soon as pregnancy is detected.
Warnings
Contraindicated with previous ACE-inhibitor-related angioedema or hereditary/idiopathic angioedema; Hypotension and hyperkalemia; Concomitant neprilysin inhibitor use is contraindicated
Interactions
Neprilysin inhibitors; ARBs / aliskiren (dual RAS blockade)

Lisinopril / Hydrochlorothiazide

Same class family: ACE inhibitors

Mechanism: Lisinopril inhibits ACE, lowering angiotensin II and aldosterone; hydrochlorothiazide is a thiazide diuretic.

On both cards: Common side effects — Headache; Dizziness; Fatigue; Cough

Only on the Lisinopril / Hydrochlorothiazide card: Used for — Hypertension when this fixed-dose combination is appropriate; it is not indicated for initial therapy · Common side effects — Orthostatic effects · Warnings — History of ACE inhibitor angioedema; Anuria / sulfonamide hypersensitivity; Contraindicated with sacubitril (neprilysin inhibitor) · Interactions — Diuretics (hypotension); NSAIDs incl. COX-2 inhibitors; Dual RAS blockade (ARBs, aliskiren)

Ramipril

Same class family: ACE inhibitors

Mechanism: Ramiprilat inhibits ACE, blocking conversion of angiotensin I to angiotensin II and reducing aldosterone.

On both cards: Common side effects — Headache; Dizziness; Fatigue; Cough

Only on the Ramipril card: Used for — Hypertension in adults; Reduction of myocardial infarction, stroke or cardiovascular death in adults aged 55 years and older with coronary disease, prior stroke, peripheral vascular disease, or diabetes plus another labeled cardiovascular risk factor · Warnings — Angioedema; Hypotension / hyperkalemia; Renal impairment · Interactions — Diuretics; NSAIDs; mTOR or neprilysin inhibitors

Lisinopril

Same class family: ACE inhibitors

Mechanism: Inhibits angiotensin-converting enzyme, blocking conversion of angiotensin I to angiotensin II and suppressing the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system.

On both cards: Common side effects — Headache; Dizziness; Cough

Only on the Lisinopril card: Used for — Hypertension in adults and children aged 6 years and older; Adjunctive therapy for heart failure; Reduction of mortality after acute myocardial infarction in hemodynamically stable patients treated within 24 hours · Common side effects — Hypotension; Chest pain · Warnings — Angioedema; Hyperkalemia; Renal impairment · Interactions — Diuretics; NSAIDs; Lithium

An item counts as shared only when both cards use the same wording. If a card does not list an item, that is not a statement that the effect never occurs.
