How the calculation works
Each flow is discounted back to period 0 at rate I and added up.
A worked example
- Cash flow
- -1,000 · 300 · 400 · 500
- Discount rate per period (%)
- 10
Step by step
- Period 0: -1,000 ÷ (1 + 10 %)^0 = -1,000
- Period 1: 300 ÷ (1 + 10 %)^1 = 272.73
- Period 2: 400 ÷ (1 + 10 %)^2 = 330.58
- Period 3: 500 ÷ (1 + 10 %)^3 = 375.66
- NPV = -1,000 + 272.73 + 330.58 + 375.66 ≈ -21.04
The discount rate must match the period length of the flows. Period 0 is today’s amount and is not discounted.
If one input changes
- Discount rate per period (%) = 0: NPV = 200
- Discount rate per period (%) = 5: NPV = 80.44
- Discount rate per period (%) = 15: NPV = -107.91
- Discount rate per period (%) = 20: NPV = -182.87
