Build a fundamental stock screen you can explain

Turn one research question into a few visible rules, then inspect the companies that pass and those excluded by missing data.

A useful stock screen expresses a research question in rules you can explain. Start with one idea, such as looking for positive reported profits over a stated sequence of periods, rather than adding filters until the result happens to contain a favorite company.

Write the intended market, period and metric definitions before choosing thresholds. A screen is a way to narrow a research list; passing its rules is not an instruction to buy.

Give each rule a clear job

Add one condition at a time and inspect what it removes. Keep a note of whether a company fails a rule, lacks the required data or is outside the selected market. Those cases have different meanings and should not collapse into a single negative label.

  • Define the research question in one sentence.
  • Select the relevant market and reporting window.
  • Use a small set of understandable conditions.
  • Inspect missing and inapplicable values separately.
  • Read the filings of companies you investigate further.

Review the screen before trusting the shortlist

Try a slightly different threshold and see whether the result changes dramatically. A fragile shortlist may tell you more about a boundary choice than about the businesses. Check sector context before applying a ratio uniformly to very different industries.

Stock Screener includes ready-made filing-based screens, a custom screen builder, comparisons and sector information for US and Borsa Istanbul companies. Its data is a reported snapshot distributed with app updates, not a promise of current market pricing. Read the filing dates and open the source context when a result matters.

The SEC notes that financial statements work together. A screen based on one metric cannot replace the business description, notes, risk factors and management discussion that explain why the reported figures look as they do.

Questions, answered

Why did my screen return no companies?

The rules may be restrictive, the selected market may be small or required data may be missing. Check those possibilities separately.

Is a company failing my screen a bad investment?

The screen answers only its stated rules using its available data. It does not evaluate every consideration relevant to an investment decision.
