Log volume and log rules

Choose a geometric volume formula or a board-foot log rule. These measure different things; use the method agreed with your supplier.

Your measurements

Decimals and fractions such as 1.5, 1½ or 1 1/2 are accepted. Do not use thousands separators.

How the calculation works

Huber estimates solid log volume from the midpoint diameter and length. Smalian averages the cross-sectional areas at the two ends, then multiplies by length. Use the diameter location required by your chosen method.

Doyle and International ¼-inch are board-foot log rules. Their result estimates sawn yield, not the log’s geometric cubic volume. The tool keeps these result types separate and does not convert a log-rule yield estimate into physical cubic metres.
