Example calculation
Board foot calculator: worked out from the values already filled in the form above.
Inputs
- Measurements in: Millimetres
- Waste allowance (%): 15
- Price per output unit (optional): 0
- Your measurements: Thickness 25 · Width 150 · Length 2,400 · Quantity 3
Result
- Net volume: 11.442 bf
- Required: 13.158 bf
How the calculation works
Use measured thickness and width, not the nominal label on the rack. One board foot is a volume of 144 cubic inches; the board does not have to be one foot long. Each row multiplies that volume by its quantity, then the rows are added together.
Example: a board measuring 1½ × 3½ × 96 inches contains 3.5 BF. Four boards contain 14 BF. A 10% buying allowance raises the purchase estimate to 15.4 BF; it does not change the net volume in the finished pieces.
