Save reference text together with its source details
Download the reference text and the source-details JSON from the workbench, and check that the saved details reproduce the same chapter entry.
Two files, two purposes
After the workbench creates a reviewed entry, two buttons become active. Download TXT saves citelle-reference.txt, which holds the displayed reference and one final line break. Download JSON saves citelle-source.json, which holds the details you entered: source kind, people, titles, dates and the other fields. Keep both when you may need to revisit a correction later, because the reference text alone cannot show whether a detail was supplied, left out or changed.
For the invented chapter, the reference saved in the text file and reproduced from the JSON reads: Stone, M. (2024). A sample chapter. In L. Rowan (Ed.), Collected Sample Studies (pp. 12–18). Example Press.
Inside the JSON file
The JSON is the workbench's own format. It starts with schemaVersion 1, the kind citelle-explicit-source-metadata and the scope version source-specific-reference-corrections-1, followed by a source object with your normalized details. It does not store the style you selected or the reference number, so note those in your own record. It is not RIS, BibTeX or complete CSL data, and it does not download the source or check a DOI. The workbench page has no button for loading a saved file; the reproduction shown here was checked by passing the file's source details to the same formatter with APA selected.
When downloads stay disabled
- The two download buttons and Copy reference stay disabled until Create reference produces a reviewed entry.
- Editing any field disables them again until you press Create reference once more, so a file always matches the visible entry.
- In the second check on this page the publication date was removed; the entry was held and no files were offered.
- Fix the missing detail from the source rather than editing the downloaded text to hide the gap.
Export options in the app
Citelle keeps whole bibliographies on your iPhone with no account and no server. Its Export screen offers Copy bibliography, which pastes into Word, Pages or Google Docs with italics, in the free version. Word / Pages file (.rtf) with hanging indent and double spacing, BibTeX (.bib) and RIS (.ris) are part of Pro. The browser workbench offers only the TXT and JSON downloads for a single source.
Files are snapshots
A downloaded file does not update itself. If you later correct a contributor or a date, create the entry again and save new copies. The workbench builds the files in your browser tab; review what a details file contains before you share it.
Two downloads from one reviewed chapter
The invented chapter example returns these files only after its required-field checks pass.
| Filename | Content type | What this example retains |
|---|---|---|
| citelle-reference.txt | text/plain;charset=utf-8 | The displayed entry and one final newline |
| citelle-source.json | application/json | Versioned source details in the workbench’s JSON format |
