MLA 9: cite a webpage
Cite a webpage in MLA 9 with the site as italic container, the publisher, 1 June 2024, the URL without https and Accessed 26 Oct. 2026.
Site, publisher and two dates
For an MLA webpage, the page title is in quotation marks and the website is the italic container. When the publisher differs from the site name, it follows the site. The page's date is written day, month, year, the URL drops https://, and this example ends with an access date.
For Stone's page on Sample Library, the works-cited entry is: Stone, Maya. “A Sample Web Page.” Sample Library, Example Institute, 1 June 2024, example.org/sample-page. Accessed 26 Oct. 2026.
Entering site and publisher
Load a fictional example for this source kind puts Sample Library in both the site and the publisher fields, so its entry leaves out Example Institute. Replace the publisher with Example Institute to reproduce the entry on this page.
- Choose MLA 9 works-cited entry and Webpage, with Online version.
- Enter Maya Stone, A sample web page and A Sample Web Page.
- Type Sample Library in Containing work or site and Example Institute in Publisher.
- Enter https://example.org/sample-page; the entry prints example.org/sample-page.
- Put the page date in the three publication boxes as 2024, 6 and 1, and your visit, 26 October 2026, in the access boxes as 2026, 10 and 26; then create the entry.
Optional access date and repeated names
In the workbench the MLA webpage case does not require the access date. Without it, the entry simply ends after the URL, so add it when your instructions want it. If the publisher is the same as the site name, it is printed only once. The workbench abbreviates most months in MLA output, so October becomes Oct., while June is written in full.
The web form in the workbench requires Online version, a Source URL and a site name in Containing work or site. Without the site name the entry is held with Containing work or site: provide the source information.
The page in Citelle
Paste the link into Add a source and the app reads the page's citation tags. Choosing Web page fills Accessed with today, and the app's MLA entry adds Accessed with today's date if none is set, so change it to the day you actually read the page. When a single organization author is also the site or publisher, the app starts the MLA entry with the title instead of repeating the name.
Webpage mistakes in MLA
- Using the access date as the date of the page.
- Taking the footer copyright year as the page date.
- Citing a downloaded PDF report as a webpage.
- Leaving https:// in the URL when the example drops it.
- Naming the website's host company as publisher when the page names a different responsible body.

- Identify a named author or responsible organization.
- Record the page title and relevant site or publisher role.
