NLM Vancouver: cite a webpage
Cite a webpage in NLM style with [Internet], place and publisher, the date 2024 Jun 1, the [cited] date and Available from.
The Internet form
NLM's webpage form marks the medium with [Internet] after the title. The place and the responsible publisher follow, then the page's date in year, month and day order, the date you cited it in square brackets, and the address after Available from:. The site name is not used in place of the publisher's location. NLM's Citing Medicine chapter on websites is linked below.
For the dated Sample Library page, the NLM entry reads: 1. Stone M. A sample web page [Internet]. London: Example Institute; 2024 Jun 1 [cited 2026 Oct 26]. Available from: https://example.org/sample-page
Entering the Internet source
Load a fictional example for this source kind fills Sample Library as publisher, so its entry reads London: Sample Library. Type Example Institute as Publisher to match the page's record and the entry shown above.
- Choose NLM Citing Medicine numbered reference and Webpage, with Online version.
- Enter Maya Stone and A sample web page in both title fields.
- Fill Sample Library as Containing work or site, Example Institute as Publisher and London as the place.
- The page date goes in as year 2024, month 6, day 1, and the cited date goes in the access fields as 2026, 10, 26.
- Add https://example.org/sample-page and press Create reference.
Every part is checked
For an NLM webpage, the workbench requires the place, the publisher, the URL and the site name, and the access date must include year, month and day. A missing access day holds the entry with Access date: provide the source information. The page's own date is printed only as precisely as you give it; with the year and month alone it becomes 2024 Jun. The access date does not replace the publication date.
A difference in the Citelle app
The app's Vancouver entry for a web page uses the site name and the year where this example has London: Example Institute and 2024 Jun 1. If you follow the form shown here, build the entry in the workbench or correct the app's output. The app uses today's date for [cited] when no access date is set; choosing Web page fills Accessed with today, which you can change.
Webpage checks for NLM
- Find the responsible publisher and its place on the page or the site's about page.
- Use the date of the page, not a site-wide copyright year.
- Record the day you really consulted the page.
- A journal article you found online is not a webpage.
- Keep [Internet] after the title even when the site name already suggests an online source.
Gather the source details
- Identify a named author or responsible organization.
- Record the page title and relevant site or publisher role.
