Chicago 18 bibliography: cite a webpage
Cite a dated webpage in a Chicago 18 bibliography, with the full date after the site name: Sample Library, June 1, 2024.
Date after the site
In this bibliography entry for a dated webpage, the page title is in quotation marks and the full date follows the site name after a comma: Sample Library, June 1, 2024. A formal note and a page with no date need their own forms, which this page does not cover.
Dated June 1, 2024, the page's bibliography entry is: Stone, Maya. “A Sample Web Page.” Sample Library, June 1, 2024. https://example.org/sample-page.
Typing the dated page
Load a fictional example for this source kind fills Sample Library in both the site and the publisher fields, so it gives the same bibliography text as this page. Type Example Institute as publisher if you want the record to match the page's details; the entry does not change.
- Choose Chicago 18 bibliography entry and Webpage, with Online version.
- Enter Maya Stone, A sample web page and A Sample Web Page.
- The site name, Sample Library, and the address https://example.org/sample-page are both required for a webpage.
- Fill 2024, 6 and 1 in the publication date fields and press Create reference.
- With only the year, the entry becomes Sample Library, 2024. followed by the URL.
Undated pages
The workbench needs a publication year for every source in this version, so an undated page is held with Publication date: provide the source information. Do not fill in a year you cannot see on the page to get past that check. Use the Chicago examples linked below for undated pages. Example Institute, listed on the page as publisher, does not appear in this entry because the site name is given.
The page in Citelle
Paste the link into Add a source and the app reads the page's citation tags. With Chicago (notes) selected, a Pro style, the app's bibliography entry for a dated page also places the month, day and year after the site name. Copy in-text gives the shortened-note text Stone, “A Sample Web Page.” For a page without a date the app adds an Accessed date, using today's date if you have not set one.
If the app cannot open the page, it tells you, and you can still add the source by hand with its link.
Webpage cautions
- Do not use the access date as the publication date.
- A site-wide copyright line is not the page date.
- A PDF report on the site is still a report.
- Cite the page you read, not the home page.
- Check that the page date is the date of the content, not of a comment or a sidebar.
Gather the source details
- Identify a named author or responsible organization.
- Record the page title and relevant site or publisher role.
- Check the date that applies to this page.
- Retain the exact source location and the access date required by the chosen convention.
