Chicago 18 author-date: cite a published conference paper
Cite a paper from published proceedings in Chicago 18 author-date style, treated as a contribution to an edited book edited by Leo Rowan.
Proceedings paper or live talk?
The linked University of Queensland guide covers Chicago 18 author-date conference papers. The case on this page is a paper that was published in a proceedings volume and is treated like a chapter in an edited book. A presentation given at a meeting but never published needs a different reference, so make sure you are holding the published paper before you start.
For the symposium paper, the author-date example on this page is: Stone, Maya. 2024. “A Conference Paper.” In Proceedings of the Sample Symposium, edited by Leo Rowan. Example Press. The paper title is in quotation marks and the proceedings title is italicized after In.
Meeting dates are recorded, not printed
The page records meeting dates of 1–2 June 2024 and London as the meeting place. You can type them into Meeting location, Meeting start date and Meeting end date in the workbench, but this author-date entry does not print them. The workbench only requires meeting details for NLM references. Keep them in your record anyway; they help you tell the meeting year from the publication year.
Steps in the workbench
The proceedings title is printed exactly as you type it in Containing work or site. The Reviewed abbreviated proceedings title field belongs to the IEEE form only, so a short title typed there does not change this Chicago entry.
- Select Chicago 18 author-date reference and Published conference paper.
- Enter Maya Stone as author and Leo Rowan as editor; an empty editor list holds the entry with Editor details: provide the source information.
- Type A conference paper and its title-case form A Conference Paper, and Proceedings of the Sample Symposium as the containing work.
- Add Example Press and 2024. Leave the city and page range empty to match the example, then press Create reference.
Proceedings in the Citelle app
Choose Conference paper in the app and fill Proceedings title, Pages and Publisher. The Editors section appears for this type only when the record you looked up already lists editors, so a hand-entered paper may lack the edited by part; compare the preview with the example. Copy in-text gives (Stone 2024).
When the record has no proceedings title, the app uses the event name it received as the container, so compare that container with the volume's title page.
Easy mistakes with proceedings
- Citing the conference year when the volume was published later.
- Treating the meeting place as the publisher's city.
- Using a slide deck as evidence that the paper was published.
- Entering the proceedings editor as a co-author.
- Typing the meeting dates into the proceedings title when the published volume's title does not contain them.
Gather the source details
- Find the published paper and its proceedings record.
- Keep paper author and paper title separate from proceedings editors and title.
- Record publication details and the paper’s pages.
- Retain meeting dates and location when the selected form needs them.
