Chicago 18 bibliography: cite a published conference paper
Build a Chicago 18 bibliography entry for a paper in published proceedings, read alongside the University of Queensland and Chicago examples.
A contribution to published proceedings
This page covers a paper that appeared in a published proceedings volume, cited like a chapter in an edited book. A live presentation is not this case. Two sources are linked below: the University of Queensland guide on Chicago 18 conference papers and Chicago's notes-and-bibliography examples. The comparison here checks the bibliography text only, not notes.
The bibliography text checked on this page is: Stone, Maya. “A Conference Paper.” In Proceedings of the Sample Symposium, edited by Leo Rowan. Example Press, 2024.
Workbench input for the paper
Load a fictional example for this source kind fills a similar record but also adds London as the city and 12-18 as the pages, which this Chicago entry would then print. Clear those two fields to reproduce the bibliography text shown here.
- Choose Chicago 18 bibliography entry and Published conference paper.
- Enter Maya Stone as the author and Leo Rowan as the editor; the workbench holds the entry without an editor.
- Type A conference paper with the title-case form A Conference Paper, and Proceedings of the Sample Symposium as the containing work.
- Fill Example Press and 2024, leaving city and pages empty, and press Create reference.
Meeting details in your record
Your record can hold the symposium's dates, 1–2 June 2024, and its city, London. The workbench has fields for them under Published conference paper, Meeting location, Meeting start date and Meeting end date, but the Chicago bibliography entry does not print them, and only the NLM case requires them. If you fill both dates, the end date cannot be earlier than the start date. Keep the meeting year separate from the publication year, 2024 in this case.
Proceedings papers in the app
In Citelle the Conference paper type offers Proceedings title, Pages, Publisher and City. The Editors section shows for this type only when the looked-up record already has editors, so check the preview for edited by Leo Rowan. In Chicago (notes), Copy in-text gives the shortened-note text Stone, “A Conference Paper.”
Checks for this paper
- Confirm that the paper was published, not only presented.
- Do not treat the meeting city as the publisher's location.
- Keep the proceedings editor out of the author list.
- Use the publication year of the volume.
- Check that the proceedings title matches the volume's title page, not the conference website.

- Find the published paper and its proceedings record.
- Keep paper author and paper title separate from proceedings editors and title.
