Chicago 18 author-date: cite a edited-book chapter

Cite a separately authored chapter in a Chicago 18 author-date reference list, with the book title, edited by Leo Rowan, and the publisher.

What goes into a chapter entry here

A chapter with its own author in an edited book is cited under the chapter author. In this author-date entry the chapter title is in quotation marks, the book title is italicized after In, and the editor is introduced with edited by and a full name. The 18th-edition baseline on this page leaves out the chapter's page range, which Chicago treats as optional.

Applied to Stone's chapter in Rowan's collection, the entry reads: Stone, Maya. 2024. “A Sample Chapter.” In Collected Sample Studies, edited by Leo Rowan. Example Press.

Pages and place are your choice to add

In the workbench the page range is not required for Chicago chapters, unlike APA, MLA, IEEE and NLM chapters. If you type 12-18, the entry adds it after the editor: edited by Leo Rowan, 12–18. A city typed into Publication or institution city/place is also printed, as London: Example Press. Leave both empty to match the example on this page, or add them when your instructions ask for them.

Entering the chapter

Chapters in the app

In Citelle choose Book chapter on the Edit source screen; it shows the Editors section, the Book title field and Pages. Fill the chapter's pages if you have them, because the app prints them when present. Copy in-text gives (Stone 2024) for Chicago author-date. With several editors, the app lists them all after edited by and joins the last two with and.
