Chicago 18 bibliography: cite a edited-book chapter

Reference a chapter by its own author in an edited book for a Chicago 18 bibliography, with edited by Leo Rowan and the year after the publisher.

The chapter in a bibliography

For a separately authored chapter, the bibliography entry starts with the chapter author and the chapter title in quotation marks. The italicized book title follows In, then the editor with edited by, and finally the publisher and year. The 18th-edition example on this page does not need the chapter's full page range.

In a bibliography, Stone's chapter appears as: Stone, Maya. “A Sample Chapter.” In Collected Sample Studies, edited by Leo Rowan. Example Press, 2024.

Chapter input

The Separately authored book chapter kind needs both a container and at least one editor; without either, the entry is held and the missing field is named in the list below the form.

Adding pages or place

Unlike the APA, MLA, IEEE and NLM chapter cases, the Chicago chapter case in the workbench accepts an empty page range. When you do type 12-18, it is printed after the editor, and a city typed into Publication or institution city/place is printed before the publisher. Both are fine if your instructions ask for them; leave them out to match this page.

The chapter in Citelle

In the app choose Book chapter, which shows the Editors section, the Book title field and Pages. In Chicago (notes), a Pro style, Copy in-text gives Stone, “A Sample Chapter.” as a shortened-note text; add the page you cite. The app sorts a Chicago bibliography by the first author's family name, or by title when a source has no author.

On the Edit source screen, the Book title field holds Collected Sample Studies, and the app sets it in title case for Chicago when the title is in English.
