Build a watering routine around checks, not automatic pouring

Use reminders to inspect each plant and record its actual needs as the room and seasons change.

A reminder can tell you to inspect a plant; it cannot tell you that the plant definitely needs water. A useful routine gives each pot a regular check and leaves room to decide that no watering is needed today.

Start with the plant's confirmed identity and species-appropriate guidance. Then observe the real conditions in your home. Two pots of the same kind can dry differently because their size, growing medium and position differ.

Make the reminder a question

When the reminder appears, check the growing medium in a way appropriate to the plant, inspect drainage and consider the recent room conditions. Record whether you watered or only checked. This small distinction prevents a log from treating every scheduled reminder as an actual watering.

  • Keep a recognizable name and photo for each pot.
  • Record the last check separately from the last watering.
  • Check whether water remains in an outer container.
  • Review the routine after a move or seasonal change.

Let the record adjust the schedule

The RHS recommends checking whether watering is needed rather than following a rigid routine, and highlights the importance of drainage. Use several observations to choose a sensible reminder interval. A repeated wet check suggests a different inspection rhythm from repeated dry checks; neither observation calls for a universal number of days.

Verdia keeps saved plants together with photos and watering reminders. Use those reminders as prompts to look, then record what you actually did in your own routine. The web checklist does not set notifications, measure moisture or transfer a plant into the app. It helps you notice the conditions a timer cannot see.

Questions, answered

Should every plant use the same reminder?

No. Start from species-appropriate guidance and adjust the inspection rhythm to the pot and its conditions.

What changes when I move a plant?

Light, temperature and airflow may change. Keep a note of the move and review the actual growing-medium condition before keeping the old schedule.
