Practice finding an ERG entry by number and by name

A training workflow for checking the material entry, guide number and important annotations in ERG 2024.

ERG navigation is easier to learn when you check the same practice material in more than one way. Use an official ERG 2024 training example, look it up by its ID number and then find its name. Confirm that both routes lead to the same entry.

PHMSA describes the ERG as a guide for the initial phase of a hazardous-materials transportation incident. This page teaches reference navigation only; it does not select actions for an actual incident.

Confirm the full entry, not just the first result

Check the ID number, the exact shipping name and the associated orange guide. If a result has an annotation or green highlighting in the official book, read what that marker means before moving on. Some ID numbers can have more than one shipping name, making the name check a meaningful part of the exercise.

  • Identify the source edition as ERG 2024.
  • Find the complete ID and shipping-name entry.
  • Read the referenced orange guide.
  • Follow the book's directions for any additional table.

Keep the guide and tables connected

The orange guide is not replaced by a distance-table number. Likewise, a guide number is not a UN number. In a practice note, put each value in a labeled field so that you can explain how you reached the reference instead of remembering an isolated three-digit number.

Hazora includes offline material search, all orange guides and the ERG's distance tables. You can use the app to rehearse the same navigation with the official book open beside it. If the source and app appear to disagree, stop the exercise at the discrepancy and verify the edition and exact entry; do not resolve a safety-critical mismatch by assumption.

Questions, answered

Does every material use a green-section distance table?

No. Follow the official ERG's applicability instructions and the exact entry rather than assuming every result uses the same table.

Can a guide number identify the substance by itself?

No. Several materials may refer to a guide. Preserve the ID number and shipping name with it.
