ADR hazard identification numbers: a limited learning decoder

Distinguish a hazard identification number from a UN number and inspect a small set of educational examples.

An ADR orange panel can carry two different kinds of number. The upper number describes the hazard identification category; the lower four-digit UN number identifies the substance or entry. They answer different questions and are not interchangeable.

The decoder on this page recognizes only a small set of training examples. It is not the complete ADR table, does not identify a material and provides no incident-specific response, isolation distance or firefighting instruction.

Read the code as a code

ADR section 5.3.2.3 explains the hazard identification system and lists the meanings of particular numbers. Repeated digits can intensify a hazard, while some combinations have a specific listed meaning. An X prefix indicates a dangerous reaction with water. Do not build a complete interpretation by casually translating each digit in isolation.

Panel elementQuestion it addresses
Upper hazard numberWhat hazard identification category is indicated?
Lower UN numberWhich substance or entry is identified?
PlacardWhich hazard class or subsidiary hazard is shown?

Use the official entry for anything beyond practice

Compare an educational example with the full ADR entry, including its qualifiers. A result outside this tool's small supported set must remain unrecognized here; it must not be guessed from the nearest-looking code. The source link gives access to the official ADR 2025 volumes.

Hazora's iPhone app combines ADR-number lookup with the separate ERG 2024 material and guide references. Neither the short decoder nor an upper panel number supplies all the information needed for an emergency decision. In a real incident, use trained responders, the applicable official references and local procedures.

Questions, answered

Can I enter a four-digit UN number here?

This tool is for its listed hazard-number examples only. A UN/NA material lookup is a different function.

Does an X prefix tell me what action to take?

No. It flags a water-reaction issue within the ADR code. Actual response decisions require the complete material information and qualified procedures.
