Example calculation
Saw kerf calculator: worked out from the values already filled in the form above.
Inputs
- Measurements in: Millimetres
- Saw kerf: 3
- Stock length: Length 2,400 · Quantity 2
- Quantity: Length 700 · Quantity 4
Result
- Offcuts and sawdust (%): 41.667%
- Stock length 1: 2,400 mm → 700 mm + 700 mm + 700 mm
- Remaining: 291 mm
- Total saw-cut loss: 9 mm
- Stock length 2: 2,400 mm → 700 mm
- Remaining: 1,697 mm
- Total saw-cut loss: 3 mm
How the calculation works
Kerf is the width removed by the blade, not a gap that can become another usable piece. The planner counts the cuts between pieces and the final cut needed to separate a remaining offcut. It never gives that sawdust back as usable stock.
Three 400 mm pieces do not fit into a 1200 mm board when the kerf is 3 mm. Two pieces fit, leaving 394 mm after the two separating cuts. End trimming and defects need additional allowances in your stock dimensions.
