Example calculation
Quilt backing calculator: worked out from the values already filled in the form above.
Inputs
- Measurements in: Millimetres
- Width: 1,500
- Length: 2,000
- Fabric width: 1,100
- Extra on each edge: 100
- Seam allowance per edge: 12.7
- Total width removed for selvages: 25
- Panel joins: Choose the shorter total length
Result
- Required: 4.4 m · 4.812 yd
- Panels: 2
- Panel joins: Vertical
- Usable fabric width: 1,075 mm
- Vertical: 2 × 2.2 m = 4.4 m
- Horizontal: 3 × 1.7 m = 5.1 m
How the calculation works
Overage is added to each edge of the quilt top. Selvage loss reduces usable fabric width. When panels are joined, each join consumes two seam allowances; simply dividing the required width by fabric width can therefore undercount panels.
The result compares horizontal and vertical joins, or respects the direction you choose. For directional prints, the shortest total length may not be the right choice. Check the panel count and join direction together before ordering.
