NLM Vancouver: cite a doctoral dissertation
Cite an unpublished institutional print copy of a doctoral dissertation in NLM style, with [dissertation], the university as publisher, and the year.
An unpublished print dissertation
This example is the unpublished print copy of a doctoral dissertation held by the university. The designation [dissertation] follows the title before its final period, and the awarding university acts as publisher after the place. NLM's Citing Medicine chapter on dissertations and theses is linked below.
The NLM example for the printed dissertation reads: 1. Stone M. A sample dissertation [dissertation]. London: Example University; 2024.
Only doctoral dissertations are covered. A master's thesis or another degree needs the designation printed on the document, which this workbench cannot produce, so use the Citing Medicine chapter for those.
Settings for the printed copy
The place, London, is required for NLM dissertations. Without it the entry is held with Publication or institution city/place: provide the source information.
- Choose NLM Citing Medicine numbered reference and Doctoral dissertation, with Version consulted set to Print version.
- Enter Maya Stone and A sample dissertation in both title fields, and 2024.
- Leave Document designation on Doctoral dissertation and choose Unpublished institutional dissertation.
- Fill Example University as Awarding or responsible institution and London as the place, and leave Repository or archive name, the publication number and the URL empty.
- Press Create reference.
Online copies are held here
The reviewed NLM case is the printed institutional copy only. If you choose Online version or add a URL, the workbench holds the entry, because repository and online variants of NLM dissertations still need their own templates. Check whether you read the printed work or an online copy, and if it was online, follow the Citing Medicine chapter linked here.
The workbench also leaves the department out of this NLM entry; the Reviewed department citation label field is read only by the IEEE form.
The dissertation in Citelle
Citelle's Thesis type has a University / institution field and a URL, but no City field. Its Vancouver entry uses the institution as publisher, yet it places [dissertation] after the title's closing period and has no place to print London, so compare it with the example above. The app has no field for publication status either, so telling a printed copy from a repository copy is up to you. Vancouver is part of Citelle Pro.
Dissertation slips in NLM style
- Citing a repository copy with the print form.
- Putting the designation after the publisher instead of after the title.
- Using the repository host as the publisher.
- Leaving out the place of the university.
- Adding a URL to a print-copy record, which the workbench treats as a different source.
Gather the source details
- Verify the author, title and completion year.
- Record the awarding institution and actual document designation.
- Distinguish an unpublished institutional copy from a repository publication.
- Keep any repository name, publication number or source location required for that version.
