APA 7: cite a webpage
Cite one dated webpage in APA 7 with year, month and day in parentheses, the site name, and the URL, using the June 1, 2024 example.
One page, one date
Cite the specific page you used, not the whole website. Look for a named author or a responsible organization, the page title, and a date that belongs to that page. A copyright year in the site footer usually describes the site, not the page. If what you downloaded is really a report, a book or a journal article, it keeps that category even though you found it on a website.
For the Sample Library page dated 1 June 2024, the APA example is: Stone, M. (2024, June 1). A sample web page. Sample Library. https://example.org/sample-page The page title is italicized. The date is written as year, then month and day, inside the parentheses: 2024, June 1.
Entering the Sample Library page
- Choose APA 7 reference and Webpage. Version consulted must be Online version; with Print version the entry is held.
- Enter Maya Stone and A sample web page as Source title and Reviewed sentence-case title.
- Type Sample Library in Containing work or site and https://example.org/sample-page in Source URL; both are required for this kind.
- Fill Publication year 2024, Publication month, if supplied 6 and Publication day, if supplied 1, then press Create reference.
- Example Institute can go in Publisher, but the entry names the site, Sample Library, when one is given.
Dates you have and dates you do not
The workbench prints only the precision you give it. With 2024 and 6 the date becomes 2024, June; with the year alone it becomes 2024. It does not accept an undated page in this version: without a year the entry is held with Publication date: provide the source information. An access date is a separate fact. You can fill the access fields, but the APA webpage entry here does not print them.
Saving the page in the app
Paste the page link into Citelle's Add a source. The app reads the page's own citation tags, such as citation and Dublin Core metadata, and if the page carries a DOI it follows the DOI instead. When the page will not open, the app says so and you can still add it manually with the link. Choosing the Web page type fills Accessed with today's date, which you can change with the date picker.
Webpage traps
- Using the day you visited as the publication date.
- Taking the footer copyright year as the page date.
- Citing a PDF report found on the site as a webpage.
- Shortening the URL to the home page instead of the page you read.
Gather the source details
- Identify a named author or responsible organization.
- Record the page title and relevant site or publisher role.
- Check the date that applies to this page.
- Retain the exact source location and the access date required by the chosen convention.
