NLM Vancouver: cite a edited-book chapter
Reference a contribution by its own author in an edited book in NLM style: In: Rowan L, editor, then the book, place, publisher, year and p. 12-18.
A contribution under NLM rules
This case is a separately authored contribution to an edited book, the form the page ties to NLM's chapter2D category. A part of a book written by the book's own author is a different case. The entry gives the contribution first, then In: with the editor written family name first and followed by editor, the book title, place, publisher, year and the contribution's pages after p.
Numbered 1, the contribution reads: 1. Stone M. A sample chapter. In: Rowan L, editor. Collected Sample Studies. London: Example Press; 2024. p. 12-18.
Chapter input
For NLM chapters the Print version is the reviewed case. Choosing Online version holds the entry with Version consulted: this source form is outside the reviewed case set, because there is no reviewed template for Internet chapters yet.
- Choose NLM Citing Medicine numbered reference and Separately authored book chapter, with Print version.
- Add Maya Stone as author and Leo Rowan in Editors, in source order.
- Type A sample chapter in the title fields and Collected Sample Studies as the container.
- Fill London, Example Press, 2024 and the pages 12-18. Place, editor and pages are all required for the NLM chapter.
- Press Create reference.
Editors, plural and singular
With one editor the entry says editor; with two or more the workbench writes editors after the list. The page range keeps a plain hyphen and follows p. after the year. The book title is printed exactly as typed in Containing work or site, so Collected Sample Studies keeps its capitals in this example. The online form of a chapter is held for NLM in this version.
The chapter in Citelle
In the app, choose Book chapter, which shows the Editors section, Book title and Pages. Its Vancouver entry follows the same order of contribution, In:, editors, book title, place and publisher. Note that the app puts titles into sentence case for Vancouver, so check the book title against the example. Copy in-text gives the bibliography number in parentheses.
Because Vancouver is a numbered style, the app numbers the chapter by its position in the bibliography, in the order sources were added, so the 1 in the example becomes whatever position your chapter holds.
Contribution errors

- Citing a same-author part of a book as a contribution.
- Leaving out the place of publication.
- Using the whole book's pages for the chapter.
- Writing the editor's initials before the family name; NLM gives Rowan L.
