NLM Vancouver: cite a book
Cite a print book in NLM Citing Medicine style with title, 2nd ed., London: Example Press; 2024 as separate parts of the entry.
Place and publisher are both required
For a print book, the NLM entry keeps title, edition, place and publisher as separate parts: the title ends with a period, the edition follows as 2nd ed., then the city, a colon, the publisher, a semicolon and the year. The NLM Citing Medicine chapter on books is linked below.
The NLM entry for Stone's book reads: 1. Stone M. A small book. 2nd ed. London: Example Press; 2024.
Book input
Titles in this style are in sentence case, and the NLM form reads the Reviewed sentence-case title field. If that field is empty, the workbench prints the source title unchanged, so check capitals on A small book before you press Create reference.
- Choose NLM Citing Medicine numbered reference, Authored book and Print version.
- Add the author row for Maya Stone. The NLM form reads its title from the sentence-case field, so A small book goes there as well as in Source title.
- Type 2 in Numbered edition; a first edition is not printed.
- Fill London in Publication or institution city/place, Example Press in Publisher and 2024.
- Press Create reference. Without the city, the entry is held with Publication or institution city/place: provide the source information.
Print only, for now
The reviewed NLM book case is the print form. If you choose Online version, the workbench holds the entry because Internet book variants still need independent templates. In that case, use the Citing Medicine chapter linked here directly. The workbench also does not supply a city for you or guess one from the publisher's name.
The workbench writes the edition as 2nd ed. from the number 2, and leaves a first edition out. It also keeps the names in Stone M form: family name, a space, then the initials without periods or spaces.
Citelle's Vancouver book entry
Scan the ISBN with Scan barcode in Add a source, or type the ISBN and tap Find; the app reads the edition record from Open Library. Its Vancouver entry for a book prints the edition, City and Publisher in the same order as the example when those fields are filled, so check the City field on the Edit source screen. Vancouver is a Pro style in the app, and the entries are numbered in the order you added them.
If the looked-up record has no city, the City field stays empty and the entry has no place; add London from the title page.
Book mistakes in NLM style
- Leaving the city out because another style does not need it.
- Naming an ebook platform as publisher.
- Recording a reprint as a new edition.
- Italicizing the title, which this plain-text format does not do.
- Adding periods to the initials, as in Stone M., when the example writes Stone M.
Gather the source details
- Check the exact author or editor role.
- Record the complete book title and the edition used.
- Verify the publication year and publisher.
- Keep the publication place only when the selected convention requires it.
