Chapter authors, book editors and containing titles
Keep a chapter's author, the book's editor and the containing book title in their own fields, and see which missing roles stop the entry.
Which part did you read?
A separately authored chapter has its own title and its own author. The book that contains it brings a second title, an editor and a publisher. The role table above shows the invented record: Maya Stone wrote A sample chapter, Leo Rowan edited Collected Sample Studies, Example Press published it, and the chapter runs from page 12 to 18. Before choosing the chapter kind, check that the part really has its own author; a numbered section in a book by one writer is not a separate contribution.
With every role in place, the APA chapter entry is: Stone, M. (2024). A sample chapter. In L. Rowan (Ed.), Collected Sample Studies (pp. 12–18). Example Press. Stone holds the author position, Rowan is named as editor of the containing book, and 12–18 describes the chapter, not the whole book.
What happens when a role is missing
The second table shows two incomplete versions of the same record. With the editor removed, the workbench holds the entry and lists Editor details: provide the source information. With the containing title removed, it lists Containing work or site: provide the source information. It does not borrow the publisher's name as an editor, and it does not copy the chapter title into the empty container field. Look up the missing detail in the book itself, then press Create reference again.
Filling the roles in the workbench
- Pick Separately authored book chapter as the Source kind; the Editors, in source order group appears for this kind and for published conference papers only.
- Type the chapter's author under Authors and the book's editor under Editors, keeping the order printed in the book.
- Put the chapter title in Source title and the book title in Containing work or site.
- Enter the chapter's own page range in Published page range; a journal volume, a report number or the book's total page count does not belong there.
- Switching the kind to Authored book would not repair a missing editor; it would describe a different source.
Roles in the Citelle app
On the app's Edit source screen, the Book chapter type shows the Editors section, the Book title field and Pages. When Crossref returns a chapter with both a series name and a book title, Citelle keeps the book title as the container, so a series such as a lecture-notes series does not take the book's place. For a conference paper, the Editors section appears only when the looked-up record already lists editors.
Role checks before you copy
- The same person can be a chapter author and the book's editor; record both roles.
- An organization named as publisher is not automatically the editor.
- A proceedings paper or a chapter in a single-author book needs its own source choice.
- This one example does not cover every chapter variant in every style.
Follow one invented chapter record
| Role | Supplied value |
|---|---|
| Chapter author | [{"family":"Stone","given":"Maya","literal":""}] |
| Chapter title | A sample chapter |
| Book editors | [{"family":"Rowan","given":"Leo","literal":""}] |
| Containing book title | Collected Sample Studies |
| Publisher | Example Press |
| Chapter pages | 12-18 |
Maya Stone, Leo Rowan, Collected Sample Studies and Example Press are synthetic demonstration details. They show separate roles rather than identifying a real publication.
Review missing role information
| Input change | Accepted | Field needing review |
|---|---|---|
| Complete supplied chapter | true | None in this example |
| Editors removed | false | editors |
| Containing title removed | false | container |
The reviewed APA chapter route holds these incomplete examples. It does not infer editors from the publisher or replace the missing containing title with the chapter title. Find the details in the source before trying again.
