Chicago 18 bibliography: cite a journal article
Write the Chicago 18 bibliography entry for a journal article in the notes-and-bibliography system, with no. 2 and the year in parentheses.
Bibliography entry, not a footnote
Chicago's notes-and-bibliography system has three forms for the same article: a full note, a shortened note and a bibliography entry. This page covers only the bibliography entry. Notes use their own order, punctuation and page locators, so do not paste this entry into a footnote.
The reviewed bibliography entry is: Stone, Maya. “A Small Study.” Journal of Sample Studies 12, no. 2 (2024): 12–18. The article title is in quotation marks, the journal title is italicized, the issue is introduced by no., and the year sits in parentheses before the colon and the page range.
Entering the article for a bibliography
With two authors the workbench writes the second name in natural order after and, as in Stone, Maya, and Leo Rowan; only the first name is inverted. Up to six authors are listed in full.
- Choose Chicago 18 bibliography entry, Journal article and Print version.
- Enter Maya Stone; the entry inverts the first author's name to Stone, Maya.
- Type A small study and the title-case form A Small Study; the bibliography uses the title-case field.
- Journal of Sample Studies goes in Containing work or site; 12 and 2 go in Journal volume and Journal issue, 12-18 in Published page range, and 2024 is the year.
- Press Create reference, then add italics to the journal title when you paste the copied text.
Notes are outside the workbench
The workbench returns a bibliography entry only. It produces no full note, no shortened note and no in-text citation, and it does not add the page you quote. In the Citelle app, Chicago (notes) is a Pro style. There, Copy in-text gives a shortened-note text, Stone, “A Small Study.”, which you place in your footnote and complete with the page you cite. Check the full-note form against the Chicago examples linked on this page.
Pages, numbers and identifiers
Longer page ranges are shortened in the workbench's Chicago output; 436-444, for example, becomes 436–44, while 12-18 is printed in full. A journal that uses article numbers instead of pages is outside the reviewed template, and the workbench holds the entry rather than inventing pages. A DOI is added at the end as a https://doi.org/ link.
Article checks for notes and bibliography
- Keep the journal title out of the author position.
- Use the published page range for the bibliography and a single page for a note.
- Do not take the page count of the PDF for the article's pagination.
- Check that the bibliography entry and your notes give the same author, title and year.
Gather the source details
- Open the article or its publisher record.
- Record authors in the published order.
- Distinguish the article title from the journal title.
- Check volume, issue, pages or article number and any assigned DOI.
