Choose the siddur nusach that matches your practice

Understand why prayer-book wording and order vary, and how to keep the selected rite consistent.

Nusach identifies a prayer tradition's wording and order. It is not simply a choice of display language or font. Two siddurim can contain the same broad service while differing in details that matter to someone following a particular community's practice.

When you set up a digital siddur, begin with the prayer book you already use or ask the person who guides your practice. The most convenient default is not necessarily the tradition you intend to follow.

Check the rite before comparing the text

Look at the title page or settings of your existing siddur and write down the nusach label. Amidora offers Ashkenaz, Sefard and Edot HaMizrach. Similar-sounding labels should not be assumed to mean the same text: Chabad's explanation distinguishes the Chassidic use of Nusach Sephard from Sephardic rites often described as Edot HaMizrach.

  • Identify the nusach you ordinarily use.
  • Select the corresponding setting in the app.
  • Check the service and calendar context as well.
  • Ask your rabbi if you are unsure about changing practice.

Separate a text difference from a navigation mistake

If a line appears missing, first check whether you opened the weekday service, Shabbat service or a calendar-specific section. Then compare the same part of the same service in the same nusach. This gives you a precise question instead of a general impression that one prayer book is wrong.

Amidora provides the available texts and marks relevant additions for the day. English availability can differ between sections, so check the actual text you intend to read rather than assuming that every prayer has a complete parallel translation. The app is a reading aid; it does not choose a person's religious practice.

Questions, answered

Is nusach the same as language?

No. Language describes the language of the text; nusach concerns the prayer tradition and its wording, order and additions.

Should I switch to the congregation's nusach?

That is a practical religious question. Follow your rabbi or established community guidance rather than a setting suggestion on this page.
