What should a soil-moisture observation record before any watering decision?
Record what was observed in the growing medium before deciding whether a plant needs water.
Describe the observation method
A moisture note is more useful when it says how the observation was made. Record whether only the surface was inspected, whether a suitable check reached farther into the medium, and whether standing water or drainage was observed. Do not convert a description such as “feels damp” into an invented percentage.
The result needs context: plant identity, container and growing medium can change what a reading means. A dry-looking surface alone does not establish the condition of the whole root zone. The record is an observation for a plant-specific decision, not a universal watering threshold.
Example of a bounded entry
- Record the date, plant identifier and the method used.
- Write the observed condition, such as a dry-looking surface, without claiming the whole pot is dry.
- Keep a watering action as a separate event if one is later appropriate.
