How can progress photographs stay comparable over time?
Keep a dated series of plant photographs comparable without turning image differences into a health score.
Make the next photograph answer the same question
Choose one feature to follow, such as the outline of a particular leaf or the extent of a visible mark. Photograph it from a similar angle and distance each time, and include a whole-plant view for context. Changing the light or crop can alter the apparent colour and scale even if the plant has not changed.
A sequence is a record of appearance, not a diagnosis. Keep an original photograph and its date rather than overwriting the earlier view with an edited comparison. If a leaf falls or a marked feature is removed, note that event; the next image no longer follows exactly the same subject.
Example series
- Day 1: name the observed leaf and record the camera position.
- Day 4: repeat that view and note any changed lighting or position.
- Compare visible shape and distribution while retaining the uncertainty introduced by the photographs.
