How can an unfamiliar organism be documented without touching it?
Document an unfamiliar organism from a suitable distance instead of assuming that it is safe to touch.
An observation does not require contact
A photograph and a description of where an organism was seen can preserve useful information without picking it up. Keep the plant identifier, date and affected area with the observation. A familiar-looking body shape is not enough to establish identity or safe handling.
Some organisms can irritate or otherwise harm people. The linked oak processionary moth reference describes caterpillars and nests that should not be approached or handled. A broad chewing-pest label must not turn into a general instruction to collect every caterpillar by hand.
A bounded observation record
- Observe from an appropriate distance and avoid touching an unfamiliar organism or nest.
- Record visible behaviour and location without inventing an identification.
- Use a specific local identification or reporting source where the organism may present a hazard.
