What product-label details belong in a fertilizer-use record?
Retain the exact product and application instructions before recording a fertilizer-use event.
A product name is not an application rate
Fertilizer products can differ in formulation, concentration and application method. Keep the exact product label and its instructions with a care record rather than borrowing a dose from a different product or treating one generic interval as suitable for every plant. A recorded application is also different from a plan to apply it.
The RHS advises following product-specific method, timing and dosage. This record does not calculate a dose, diagnose a nutrient deficiency or recommend that a plant needs feeding. It preserves the information needed to understand what was actually used if the plant is assessed later.
A traceable application entry
- Record the product name, formulation or analysis shown, and the label source or photograph.
- If an application occurred, record its date, actual dilution and amount using the relevant units.
- Keep any departure from the label or uncertainty explicit; do not turn a missing quantity into zero.
