How can an outer pot hide standing water after watering?
Record whether water remains in an outer pot before treating a damp setup as a plant diagnosis.
Inspect the container arrangement
A decorative outer pot can conceal water around the inner container. Record whether the plant is in a single pot or a pot inside another pot, whether drainage holes are visible, and whether water is standing outside the inner pot. These observations describe the setup; they do not identify a pathogen.
Do not conclude that a wilted plant automatically needs more water. A useful record separates the visible water from the condition of the growing medium and the date of the last actual watering event. The same symptom can have several causes, and plant-specific requirements still matter.
A concrete observation entry
- Example: inner pot with drainage holes; outer pot present; visible standing water noted at 18:00.
- Add the date and what was observed without inventing a measured moisture percentage.
- If the setup is changed, record the change separately and keep the earlier entry.
