What can a care-lookup alias establish about a plant name?
Keep a successful name lookup separate from a verified current botanical name.
A lookup route is not a taxonomic conclusion
A saved name can be redirected to a broader care-record label so a person can find an existing entry. That convenience does not establish that the entered name is currently accepted, that two genera are interchangeable, or that a species has been identified. Preserve the name originally entered alongside the lookup result.
For a taxonomic question, consult a suitable current name source and retain its accepted-name or synonym status with the date. Kew describes how its records attach information to an accepted-name backbone while preserving names used in older sources. That source context is different from a care lookup.
An example name record
- Keep “Nolina” as the entered label when a lookup routes it to “Beaucarnea”.
- Do not change a species label or infer care or pet safety from that route alone.
- If checking botanical acceptance, save the exact name record and source date separately.
