Which period checks belong before dividing two statement values?

Check the time context and measure definitions of both inputs before constructing a financial ratio.

A matching company is only the first check

A ratio needs a definition of numerator and denominator, compatible units and an appropriate time relationship. Two values for the same company can still cover different periods or use different accounting scopes. A familiar ratio name does not select those inputs automatically.

For two duration measures intended to cover the same interval, compare both start and end dates. For a definition using balance-sheet instants or an average balance, retain that distinct convention rather than pretending that all inputs must be duration facts.

Keep the derivation separate from reported facts

Apple’s operating cash flow and revenue examples below share the stated duration and USD unit. That establishes visible input context for a possible separately defined calculation; it does not by itself establish which ratio is appropriate or meaningful.

Label a calculated result as derived, retain the input rows and handle a zero or unavailable denominator explicitly. This reference does not turn a ratio into an investment recommendation or a conclusion about current financial strength.
