How do per-share units differ from currency totals?

Read earnings-per-share as a reported per-share quantity rather than as a currency total.

The denominator is part of the unit

A currency-per-share value includes a share denominator. It is not comparable with a company’s total currency amount merely because both labels contain the same currency code. Preserve the full unit and the exact earnings-per-share concept.

Diluted and basic earnings per share are also different concepts. A source value should keep the concept that actually supplied it; changing the heading does not convert one definition into the other. A later calculation needs its own stated input and period checks.

Read the reported example on its own terms

The Apple example below is diluted earnings per share, with the source unit USD/shares. Its value 7.46 is not seven dollars and forty-six cents of total corporate profit. The period boundaries and filing remain attached.

Do not infer a current valuation ratio from this historical per-share amount alone. A current price, if needed for a different analysis, would require a separate source, date and definition that this reference does not provide.
