How can an annual financial fact be distinguished from a quarterly fact?
Check exact duration boundaries instead of treating every amount in an annual filing as a full-year total.
An annual document can contain several periods
A filing form and a fact’s reporting duration are separate pieces of information. Before describing an amount as annual, inspect the start and end dates and the underlying statement. A row can be reported in a later annual filing without covering that later filing’s full year.
The historical reference selects duration candidates with 300–400 days, from annual filing contexts. That is a stated selection rule for this reference, not a claim that every company uses the same number of days or that every shorter row is a quarter.
A practical duration check
Keep the actual dates rather than converting every accepted interval into January–December. Apple’s example runs from 29 September 2024 through 27 September 2025. Its end year alone does not describe its beginning.
If a source period falls outside the reference’s rule, leave it outside the reference rather than stretching dates or deriving a missing annual total from unrelated rows. Consult the actual filing for the intended reporting period.
