Inspect the whole covered-image export

One black rectangle in the Shotnest redact helper hides one area only; repeated names, previews and headers elsewhere stay visible in the new PNG.

One rectangle per export

The redact helper accepts a single rectangle: left edge, top edge, width and height in pixels. It draws the original image onto a canvas, sets the fill to black at full opacity and paints that rectangle. The rest of the image is copied unchanged into a new PNG, and the original file is never modified.

Screenshots often show the same detail more than once. A chat screen can repeat a contact name in the title bar, in a quoted reply and in a notification at the top. Covering one of them leaves the others readable.

The rectangle is checked against the image before anything is drawn. Left edge plus width must not pass the right side of the image, and top edge plus height must not pass the bottom; a rectangle that does is rejected with an error instead of being clipped, so the covered area is always exactly the one you entered.

Check the whole exported copy

  1. List every place the private detail appears before you draw the first rectangle.
  2. Cover the first area and create the PNG.
  3. Open that PNG, not the original, and look at headers, footers, badges and small previews.
  4. If another area needs covering, load the exported PNG and add the next rectangle.
  5. Keep the original and the reviewed sharing copy as separate files.

Places a single box misses

Keep the covering rectangle a few pixels larger than the text it hides, so antialiased letter edges at the border do not stay readable.

Covered is not anonymous

The helper performs one pixel replacement where you place it. It does not scan for personal data, read barcodes or certify that an image is safe to publish. The redact tool linked below shows a reminder to check the entire export for that reason.
