Give a saved screenshot one retrieval purpose
Decide whether a screenshot is for comparing, reading, proving a purchase or finding a place, then choose the Shotnest shelf or folder that serves it.
Shelves follow text, purposes follow you
Shotnest sorts screenshots onto eleven shelves: AI conversations, Recipes, Shopping, Receipts, Places, Tickets, Messages, Code, Social posts, Reading and Other. The suggestion comes from the words, prices, times and line shapes in the text. It cannot know why you took the screenshot.
A product page and the receipt for the same product share words, yet one is for comparing options and the other is evidence of a purchase. Stating the purpose first tells you which shelf to accept, which one to change with Move to shelf, and when a folder is the better home.
When the rules are unsure, which means a score under 3 on text of at least 12 characters, the app asks Apple’s on-device model for a shelf where the phone supports it. Either way the result is a suggestion: a shelf you choose with Move to shelf is kept, and the settings note for reading everything again says that folders and shelves you picked stay.
File one screenshot by purpose
- Say in a few words why you kept it: compare two kettles, keep a quotation, return an item, find a café again.
- Check that the screenshot shows what that purpose needs, such as the variant, the date or the address.
- Accept the suggested shelf if it matches; otherwise move it.
- Use a folder when several shelves belong to one task, for example a trip with tickets, places and messages.
- Look again later and remove it from the folder when the purpose is finished; it stays in Photos.
Filing mistakes
- Letting the product name decide the shelf when the screenshot is really a receipt.
- Keeping a place screenshot without the name or address that makes it findable.
- Leaving every unclear item on Other with no decision about its purpose.
- Creating a folder for each screenshot instead of one per task.
What a shelf cannot decide
Shelves describe text evidence. Whether an item is still useful, current or safe to share depends on the purpose you set. The search tool linked below can help you find related records once you know what you are looking for.
A shelf you set by hand is a decision about purpose, so make it when the screenshot is fresh and you still remember why you took it.
