Review a reading suggestion below the rule threshold
A 421-character prose passage reaches the Reading shelf in Shotnest with a rule score of 2, one point under the confidence threshold of 3.
How plain prose earns a Reading suggestion
Most shelves are found through keywords: “subtotal” for receipts, “boarding pass” for tickets. Ordinary prose has no such words, so the classifier uses text shape instead. It measures each non-empty line, counting wide characters such as CJK as two units. When the total is at least 300 units, the average line is at least 22 units and fewer than three lines look like code, the text counts as prose and gets a Reading score of 2 plus one point for every six lines longer than 40 units.
A single long paragraph therefore scores 2. The confidence threshold is 3, so the suggestion is reported as not confident. In the app, that state is exactly when Shotnest asks Apple’s on-device model for a shelf, if the model is available on the phone.
Try the original example
- Text
- A quiet reading room has several shelves and a wide table. The passage describes how visitors choose a place to read, keep their notes together and return a borrowed volume to the right desk. Its purpose is to provide a long, ordinary prose example without copying a published work or representing a private document. The final sentences keep the context complete enough to review as a small standalone reading reference.

Read the example result
- Paste the example passage; it is one line of 421 characters.
- Check the suggested shelf: Reading.
- Check the score: 2, which is below 3, so the confidence flag is off.
- Note that no keyword scores appear in the list; the suggestion comes from length and line width alone.
- Keep the author, title or page the passage came from next to the saved screenshot.

What changes the outcome
Cut the same passage to its first 250 characters and the total falls under 300, so the prose rule no longer applies and the result becomes Other with a score of 1. Spread the original over six or more lines that are each longer than 40 characters and the score rises to 3, which crosses the threshold.
- Reading a not-confident Reading result as a mistake; for long prose it is the normal state.
- Treating one stray keyword as stronger evidence than the shape of a long passage. A weak keyword score below 3 does not take the shelf away from prose that scores at least as much.
- Saving a quotation without its source, so the reference cannot be checked later.
Limits of a shape rule
Line width says nothing about what the passage means or who wrote it. The classifier tool linked below reports the rule score only; whether the passage is worth keeping as a reading reference is your call after reading it.
