Keep attribution with a reading reference

A saved passage is only citable when author, title and page travel with it; Copy text gives you the words, not a source the screenshot does not show.

What Shotnest keeps from a reading screenshot

Shotnest reads the visible text of a book page, article or document screenshot and files long prose under Notes & articles. In the detail view, Copy text puts the recognised words on the clipboard, and any web addresses in the text appear under Links. Search inside a page even joins a word that was hyphenated across a line break.

The app only knows what is printed in the image. If the author, publication and date sit outside the captured area, they are not part of the saved reference and cannot be recovered from the text.

If a passage lands on another shelf, Move to shelf files it under Notes & articles, and a choice made by hand is kept when the library is read again.

Capture a passage you can credit

  1. Include the title, author or site name in the screenshot, or take a second screenshot of it.
  2. Keep the page number or section heading visible when the source has one.
  3. Put the passage and its source screenshot in the same folder.
  4. When quoting, copy the text with Copy text and check it against the image word by word.

Gaps in a saved quote

Attribution comes from the source

The examples in this library are newly written text, so they carry no rights questions. Your own saved passages do, and a shelf name or folder cannot settle them.

Copy text returns the recognised text with its line breaks, so join hyphenated words and check each break before pasting a quotation.
